I've been meaning to write this blog post since the end of January, but alas, it's already March. I rarely make New Year's Resolutions, but this year I thought I would give it a shot and see how it went.
No, blogging more was not on my resolutions list...for good reason - obviously, I'm thinking it will be more of a priority next year (after I finish grad school).
This year I made my first resolution early on in 2012, my goal: to not take more than two days off of working out the entire year. My progress to-date: I have successfully not taken more than two days off in a row since Jan. 1, 2012. That's not to say all of my workouts have been hard core calorie blasters, but I figure if I keep moving and don't take too much time off then I'll be in pretty good shape all year long.
Resolution #2 wasn't established until Feb. 1 - this year, I signed up for DailyMile - a nifty website that keeps track of your workouts and currently works better than my memory at logging my miles. I wanted to make it through the month of January and set a reasonable mileage goal for the year before outlining the goal of my resolution. According to Daily Mile, in January I covered a little over 70 miles. From there I decided that I wanted to aim for covering 750 miles before 2013.
As you can see, my progress dipped in February - granted, it is a shorter month (and the bitter cold didn't help my motivation on the dreadmill), but I am off to a steady start in March with the help of some ideal weather. But, to meet my goal I'm going to have to step up my game and sign-up for some races.
Planned Races: Participating in one of the LPR legs of the Colfax Marathon Relay on May 20.
Check out my new DailyMile widget and stay tuned for training updates - hopefully more frequently!

I hate the wind and other disgruntled thoughts
Since my snowboard mishap (i.e. me falling on my ass on solid ice and pulling my glut muscles) I've been taking it a little easier to give my muscles time to heal. I don't do well with forced recovery, and get really cranky if I take more than two days off of working out, so I've still been hitting the gym. Needless to say, my butt muscles are still crying in pain, to the point that when I lay on my back knees up to do abs I fail.
Well, spending a week on the dreadmill urged me to quit my crying about the wind and run outside. Alas, two days in a row the wind just happened to be blowing in my face up the hills, made for a nice downhill though.
Probably should have stuck with a flat surface, as I sit here in the gym stretching my aching ass, which feels much tighter than before.
Lesson learned: always take the appropriate amount of time for recovery! Or make funny noises and weird faces everytime you sit down.

Snow Day
It is a day of many firsts for the new year: first blog post, first day snowboarding this season, first time dropping the pups off at doggie day care.
I have been running regularly during the silence, more time on the treadmill than I'd like, but better than sitting around eating. I figured as long as I keep running then I won't feel so guilty eating five hundred cookies during the holiday.
Any way, we're in the new year, I haven't set any resolutions, just a goal to continue my routine of not taking more than two days off of working out in a row. So far a success
Skipped the run today and went to the mountains for some snowboarding instead. We lucked out at Keystone because it snowed all day long, making for some good runs.
Hoping to do an easy relaxed run tomorrow to stretch out my legs (I'm sure I'll be weeping a little when I get out of bad from the stiffness), but it may end up being a walk. I took a nasty spill on our second to last run that knocked the wind out of me and still has my butt throbbing from the pain.
It will likely be a lazy Sunday.

Snowy Saturday
I woke up this morning feeling pretty crappy...so I went back to sleep.
Then I finally got up and decided a trip to the gym would make me feel better. Success! 40 minutes and 4.25 miles later I'm feeling less crappy.
I started my workout with 10 minutes on the elliptical. I figured if I jumped right on the mill it wouldn't have lasted nearly as long. I finished with some weights. Three sets of a circuit including:
10 reps calf raises
12 reps squats
12 reps leg curls
12 reps leg extension
8 reps of power jumps with the medicine ball and abs in between each circuit.
All with this wonderful snowy view.

The McRib is back!
Personally, not a fan of the McRib.
This morning turned out to be nice and sunny in the 60s (now closer to the evening and it has turned cloudy and cold!). I thought I'd take advantage of this rare occurrence, now that fall is in full swing, and go for a run outside.
About to head out the door:
Me: I'm going for a run, I'll be back in about an hour.
Stu (McRib I front of him ready to be devoured): Are you telling me this to make me feel bad.
Me: No...
Stu: ...because it's working.
I didn't feel the need to say anything. He needs to indulge now because come Nov. 14 it'll be gone
Darn those limited time offers!
